David and twin brother Kevin acknowledge Hartford, CT as their birthplace. David is the younger twin of teammate Kevin Johnson; however, there is a cloud of controversy surrounding their birth…. While Kevin claims to be David’s elder by two minutes, there is a large contingency in the WMass area that point out that David was poised to be born first. But Kevin, with his win-at-all-costs mentality, made a decisive move down the homestretch and forced the doctor to perform a “c-section”…thus bringing Kevin into the world first.
David has been chasing Kevin ever since.
After his dream of becoming the next Larry Bird crashed and burned, David turned his efforts to running under the tutelage of Mike and Becca Gauvin. David became “Mr. Consistent” at Ludlow High, but was never a standout. Choosing the University of Massachusetts – Amherst to cultivate his intellect David, continued the rich tradition of WMass running. He progressed to garner A-10 All-Conference in cross country under the guidance of Ken “Obi-Wan” O’Brien at UMass. After finishing his studies at UMass David moved to Madison, Wisconsin rounding out his eligibility by training with the historic Badgers under legendary coach Mick Byrne. While David only raced one race in a Badger uniform, there is no denying the correlation between David’s presence in the Badger locker room and their 2011 Cross Country NCAA championship.
